Hainan Island and Hong Kong

Hainan Island
The tropical island of China called, Hainan Island is a popular place for the Chinese.  I found the city of Sanya, where we stayed, very dirty.  Most of the beaches were crowded.  We found a private beach that our guide, Marvin, knew about.  Monkey Island is a park where the monkeys walk free and interact with the tourists.  There were also some shows where the monkey's performed.  I prefer monkeys to be in a cage rather than walking around my legs.  It was a little creepy to me.  A lovely park at the top of a big mountain had spectacular views of the island.  That was my favorite part.

Good-bye Hainai Island

Hello Hong Kong

BYU decided to hold the annual China Teacher's Conference in Hong Kong.  It was fun to reconnect with all 80 BYU teachers.  We toured, attended conferences, listened to a general authority, went to the temple and church (both inside the same building), shared ideas, and had lots of fun together.  The conferences was funded by BYU because they wanted everyone to attend.  Unfortunately, Hong Kong provided one disaster for us because Pete had his wallet stolen in a subway.  Those thieves use techniques to steal that are hard to recognize. Luckily, we didn't have much money in the wallet.

We took a boat ride to Hong Kong Island

Once we arrived at Hong Kong Island we took a cable car to the top of Victoria Peak.  The ride up the mountain was steep with four bus stops along the way.  The views from the top were spectacular.

The visitors center at Victoria Peak

This is what all the young couples were doing on the top.  We decided to join the fun.

To the left of the visitors center was a nice path that took us through some lush tropical scenery.  Somewhere along the path President McKay dedicated Hong Kong for missionary work.

There are many beautiful gardens in Hong Kong.

Parks were decorated for the Chinese New Year

The administration building of the southeast Asia area headquarters for the Church.  It has two chapels and the area presidency lives on the top floors.  It's a beautiful building inside and out.

The walk of fame
Lots of shopping
It was after visiting this night market that Pete's wallet was stolen.
My feet hurt from walking so we opted to take a very busy subway.  When we walked off the subway the wallet was gone.
The views all over Hong Kong were pretty.  It's a mountainous area with many great parks.

We passed a floating Chinese restaurant on the fishing boat.

We were given these cute hats to wear on the fishing boat
Our hotel was a 5 minute walk to the light show every evening.

Good-bye Hong Kong (a great 'old person kiss')
